What is Maxalt MLT used for?


Maxalt MLT is used to treat migraines, and helps to alleviate headache pain, and other migraine symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light and sound. Using this medication promptly may ward off a full blown migraine and help return you to your natural equilibrium. Maxalt MLT is in a class of drugs known as triptans and it works by affecting certain substances in the body (like serotonin), which causes the narrowing of blood vessels to the brain.

This medication will not prevent future migraines, or lessen the number of times a migraine may come on. Maxalt MLT should only be used by patients who have been confirmed by a doctor to have migraine headaches.

Maxalt MLT may be taken with or without food. Being an orally-disintegrating tablet, Maxalt MLT should be placed on the tongue and allowed to dissolve. Dissolved tablet should then be swallowed with saliva.

What are the Possible Side Effects of Maxalt MLT?


Most medications will come with side effects. Before deciding if Maxalt MLT is right for you, take a closer look at what you might expect.

Here are some of the most common side effects that come with taking Maxalt MLT:
• Dizziness;
• Drowsiness;
• Pain or pressure in your throat or chest

• Bloody diarrhea;

• High levels of serotonin in the body;
o Agitation
o Hallucinations
o Fever
o Fast heart rate
o Overactive reflexes
o Nausea
o Vomiting
o Diarrhea
o Loss of coordination
o Fainting
• Dangerously high blood pressure
o Severe headache
o Blurred vision
o Buzzing in the ears
o Anxiety
o Confusion

o Shortness of breath
o Uneven heartbeats
o Seizure

Stop taking Maxalt MLT and seek help if you have any signs of allergic reaction, which includes:

Are there any Precautions and Drug interactions of Maxalt MLT?


You should not use the Maxalt MLT if you’re allergic to rizatriptan, or it you have any of the following:
• Severe or uncontrolled high blood pressure;
• Past or present heart problems;
• History of coronary artery disease;
• History of angina or heart attack;
• History of stroke;
• Blood vessel disorder;
• Circulation problems that cause lack of blood supply;
• If you have used an MAO inhibitor in the past 2 weeks;
• Headaches that seem different from your usual migraines

Be sure to talk to your doctor if Maxalt MLT is safe for you, particularly if you have:
• Liver or kidney disease;
• High blood pressure;
• Heart rhythm disorder;
• Coronary disease;
• If you are taking propranolol;
• Taking antidepressants;
• Phenylketonuria (PKU);
• Pregnant or nursing

Maxalt MLT has medications that interact with it, and may even cause high levels of serotonin to build up in your body. This is called “serotonin syndrome” and it can be fatal.

Maxalt MLT Storage and Safety Information


Store Maxalt MLT at room temperature away from extreme heat and moisture.

Do not take this medication within 24 hours before or after taking a different migraine medicine. Wait a least two hours before taking a second tablet and do not exceed 30mg of Maxalt MLT in 24 hours.

Maxalt MLT is not approved for children younger than 6 years old.

Seek emergency help or call Poison Control at 1-800-463-5060 immediately if you suspect an overdose.
