What is Maxitrol Eye Used for?


Maxitrol Eye (Neomycin, Polymyxin B and Dexamethasone) is a prescription and combination antibiotic and steroid medicine used to treat inflammation and bacterial infections in the outer part of the eye. It belongs to the class of drugs called Antibiotics/corticosteroid ophthalmic agents. The active ingredients in Maxitrol eye drops are Neomycin and polymyxin B, antibiotics that work by stopping the growth of bacteria. It also contains dexamethasone, an anti-inflammatory corticosteroid that works by reducing swelling of the eyes. This medication treats and prevents only bacterial eye infections. It will not work for other eye infections and may worsen them (e.g., infections caused by viruses, fungi, mycobacteria).

What are the Possible Side Effects of Maxitrol Eye?


The most common side effects of Maxitrol Eye include:
• Blurred vision;
• Eyes itching;
• Eye discomfort;
• Increased intraocular pressure;
• Mild eye irritation;
• Sensitivity to light

Call your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects of Maxitrol eye drops including:
• Blurred vision;
• Delayed healing of any eye wounds;
• Dilated pupil;
• Drooping eyelid;
• Eye irritation, discomfort or feeling of having something in the eye;

• Increased sensitivity to sunlight or tearing;

Are there any Precautions and Drug Interactions for Maxitrol Eye?


Before prescribing Maxitrol Eye Drops, your doctor will have examined your eye(s) and decided that Maxitrol Eye Drops is the right medicine for you. Do not use Maxitrol Eye Drops if you have an allergy to Neomycin or other aminoglycoside antibiotics such as polymyxin B. Allergy to other polymyxin antibiotics, dexamethasone, or any other polymyxin antibiotics, or other corticosteroid medicine. Maxitrol Eye Drops is not to be used if you have an ocular viral or fungal infection or have had a foreign body removed from the outside of the eye. Do not stop using Maxitrol Eye Drops or lower the dosage because you feel better unless advised by your doctor. Shake very well before use and do not allow it to touch the infected eye to prevent contamination. Tilt head back, instill suspension into the conjunctival sac, and close eye(s). Apply light finger pressure on lacrimal sac for 1 minute following instillation. Do not wear contact lenses during treatment with Maxitrol Eye.

Before you start using Maxitrol Eye drops, it is advisable to inform your doctor of your medical history, especially if you have any of the following:
• Amoebic infection of the eye;
• Diabetes mellitus;
• Disease(s) that causes thinning of the cornea (the front layer of the eyeball) or sclera (the white outer layer of the eyeball);
• Fungal infection in the eye;
• Herpes simplex dendritic keratitis;
• Open-angle glaucoma;
• Raised intraocular pressure;
• Severe near-sightedness;
• Shingles outbreak that involves the eye;
• The cornea of eye infection from vaccinia virus;
• Tuberculosis of the eye

Maxitrol Eye drop is not for use during pregnancy or breastfeeding. If you are pregnant or might get pregnant, or are breastfeeding a baby, talk to your doctor before using Maxitrol. It may not be safe to breastfeed while using this medicine. Ask your doctor about any risks.

Tell your doctor about all the medications you use, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements to prevent drug interactions, which might be fatal to your health. This drug interaction may make your drug less effective, cause adverse effects, or potentiate other drugs' action. There may be a drug interaction between Maxitrol Eye (Neomycin, Polymyxin B and Dexamethasone) and other drugs such as:
