What is Norlevo Used for?

Norlevo (Levonorgestrel) is an over-the-counter medication used to prevent pregnancy from occurring after unprotected sexual intercourse or failure of a contraceptive method (such as tearing of a condom). The active ingredient in Norlevo is Levonorgestrel. Levonorgestrel belongs to the group of medicine called Progestin contraceptive. It works by stopping the release of eggs from the ovaries, thus preventing the fertilization of the egg with the sperm. However, you should know that Norlevo cannot stop a fertilized egg from attaching to the womb and does not prevent you from contracting HIV/AIDs and other sexually transmitted diseases.

If you experience any of the following common side effects, contact your doctor or pharmacist immediately:
• Abdominal pain;
• Breast tenderness and enlargement;

Norlevo is an emergency pill and should be taken orally with or without food. You should swallow the pill whole with a cup of water. Norlevo should be used within 12 hours and no later than 72 hours after unprotected sexual intercourse. It would be best to know that Norlevo pills only prevent you from becoming pregnant if you take them within 72 hours of unprotected sex. It does not work if you are already pregnant. If you have unprotected sex after taking Norlevo, it will not stop you from becoming pregnant. It is advisable not to take the Norlevo tablets regularly to prevent your menstrual cycle from being affected. Excessive use of emergency pills such as Norlevo may cause cessation of menses or irregular menses. After taking an emergency contraceptive pill like Norlevo, you should use a barrier contraceptive method (such as a condom, spermicide, or diaphragm) for each act of intercourse until the next menstrual period. After using Norlevo, your period may start on the expected day; however, sometimes, this will be a few days later or earlier. You should consult your doctor if your menses is delayed for more than seven (7) days.

You should not take Norlevo and inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have or have had:
• Breast cancer;
• Heart diseases such as hypertension, heart failure;
• History of depression/suicidal thoughts;
Intracranial pressure;
• Kidney disease;
• Liver disease (including liver tumour);
• Pregnant or breastfeeding a child;
• Undiagnosed uterine bleeding

Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. Norlevo is an emergency contraceptive pill that should not be used during pregnancy or if you plan to become pregnant. It would be best to discuss the risks and benefits of Norlevo with your doctor if you are a nursing mother. Norlevo should be used if prescribed by a doctor.

Tell your doctor about all the medications you use, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements, to prevent drug interactions which might be fatal to your health. This interaction may make your drug less effective, cause adverse effects, or potentiate other drugs' actions. For example, there may be a drug interaction between Norlevo and other medications, such as:
Carbamazepine;
• Griseofulvin;
• Phenytoin;
• Tranexamic Acid
