What is Olpasiran Used for?

Olpasiran (Olpasiran) is a prescription medication used to lower apolipoprotein A, a key component of Lipoprotein (a), which is believed to be a causal factor in the development of cardiovascular disease. Lipoprotein (a) is a special form of cholesterol, and too much of it can raise the risk of heart disease, blood clots, and heart valve issues. Lipoprotein(a) is a sticky cholesterol, essentially a silent killer, and has been linked to aortic stenosis and atherosclerosis. Olpasiran is the active ingredient in this medication. Olpasiran belongs to the class of drugs called Lipoprotein (a) (Lp(a)) inhibitors. Olpasiran is a small RNA product with interfering RNA product targeting Lipoprotein (a) synthesis in the liver, with a drastic reduction in the level of cholesterol.

Are there any Precautions and Drug Interactions for Olpasiran?

Olpasiran is an injection vial and should be administered subcutaneously by trained clinical staff. This medication can lower as much as 95% of 'bad' cholesterol (Lipoprotein (a)). Olpasiran removes lipoproteins from the blood and is only available for people with certain Lipoprotein (a) levels and other risk factors. Your doctor will need to check your cholesterol level before prescribing this medication. A 75 mg injection vial should be given subcutaneously once every 12 weeks. You should follow your prescription label carefully and not increase your dosage while taking this medication. Do not miss your clinic appointment for regular assessment. Inform your doctor if there is no improvement in your condition or your symptoms worsen.

You should not take Olpasiran and inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have or have had:
• Current or recent lipoprotein apheresis;
• History of significant bleeding disorder;
• Planned cardiac surgery or arterial revascularization;
• Previously received ribonucleic acid therapy specifically targeting Lp(a);
• Serious cardiac problems such as severe heart failure;
• Severe kidney problems;
• Severe liver problems

Tell your doctor about all your medications, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. It is unknown if Olpasiran has a harmful effect on the growing baby. Do not use this medication as a nursing mother unless directed by your doctor.

Tell your doctor about all the medications you use, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements, to prevent drug interactions that might be fatal to your health. This drug interaction may make your drug less effective, cause adverse effects, or potentiate other drugs' actions. Olpasiran is still under clinical trials with no known interaction. However, do not use other cholesterol-lowering medications without contacting your doctor.
