What Is Olumiant Used For?

Olumiant is used in combination with methotrexate, is used for reducing the signs and symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in adult patients with moderate to severe RA who have not responded well to disease modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDs). It can also be used alone if you cannot tolerate methotrexate. Olumiant is believed to interfere with the activity of an enzyme called as Janus Kinase (JAK). Normally JAK enzymes help turn on your immune system when you need it which causes swelling and tenderness (inflammation). Olumiant attaches to JAK enzymes and can help reduce the swelling and tenderness in people with RA. Take the medication exactly as prescribed by your doctor. It can be taken by mouth with or without food. The usual dose is 2 mg once a day.

What Are The Possible Side Effects Of Olumiant?

Most common side effects caused by Olumiant include upper respiratory tract infection, nose or throat infection, cough, throat pain, headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, constipation, indigestion, dizziness, cold sores, acne, rash, high number of platelets, joint pain, muscle spasms, back pain, tiredness, trouble sleeping. Some of the serious side effects of this medication include shingles, blood clots in lungs, pneumonia, urinary tract infections, skin infection, anemia, infection of stomach and intestines, blood clot in artery, arm or leg, high blood pressure, bronchitis, flu, and skin cancer.
