What is Opzelura Used for?

Opzelura (Ruxolitinib) is a prescription medicine used on the skin (topical Cream) for short-term treatment of mild to moderate eczema (atopic dermatitis) in non-immunocompromised people 12 and above whose disease is not well controlled with topical prescription therapies or when those therapies are not recommended. The active ingredient in Opzelura Topical cream is Ruxolitinib. Ruxolitinib belongs to the group of medicine called selective Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitor. It works by specifically blocking JAK1 and JAK2, two enzymes involved in several cytokine pathways that contribute to inflammation in the skin, itch, and skin barrier function. Reducing the activity of JAK1 and JAK2 in atopic dermatitis can lead to fewer or less severe signs and symptoms by reducing irritation, rash, and skin redness.

Are there any Precautions and Drug Interactions for Opzelura?

Opzelura is for use on the skin only. Do not use Opzelura in your eyes, mouth, or vagina. The Cream should be applied as a thin film directly to the affected areas of skin twice daily. Wash your hands after applying the Cream, unless hands are being treated. If someone else applies the Cream, they should wash their hands after application. Use Opzelura cream exactly as your healthcare provider tells you. Additional usage should be discussed with your healthcare provider.

This medication should be used for a short-term (8-week) for treating atopic dermatitis or more intermittently (on/off) depending on your atopic dermatitis symptoms and areas of skin affected. It would be best to discuss with your doctor to determine the most appropriate treatment approach with Opzelura, including the overall duration of use. Consult your doctor right away if you have any symptoms of an infection. Opzelura Cream can make you more likely to get infections or, worse, any infections you have.

You should not take Opzelura and inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have or have had:
• Are being treated for an infection;
• A skin infection that does not go away or that keeps coming back;

During pregnancy, this medication should be used only when needed. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. It is unknown if this medication passes into breast milk because of the possible risk to the infant. Breastfeeding while using this medication is not recommended. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.

Tell your doctor about all the medications you use, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements to prevent drug interactions, which might be fatal to your health. This drug interaction may make your drug less effective, cause adverse effects, or potentiate other drugs' action. There may be a drug interaction between Opzelura and other drugs such as:
• Antibiotics – clarithromycin;
• HIV medicines containing atazanavir, darunavir, indinavir, nelfinavir, ritonavir, saquinavir, cobicistat;
