Ponstel(Mefenamic Acid) is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). Mefenamic Acid is used short-term to treat mild to moderate pain in adults and children over 14 years old. It works by reducing the hormones in the body that cause inflammation.

Some common side effects of Ponstel may include:

• Stomach pain;
• Indigestion;
• Nausea;
• Vomiting;
• Diarrhea;
• Constipation;
• Headache;
• Dizziness;
• Itching or rash;
• Ringing in your ears

You should not take Ponstel if you are allergic to it or if you have an active ulcer or stomach bleeding, a bowel disorder, kidney disease, history of asthma or severe allergic reaction after taking aspirin or any other NSAID. Before you start taking this medication, talk to your doctor about your medical history, and about all the medications you take including OTC and herbal medications. Specifically, tell them if you have had heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, if you smoke, have a history of heart attack, or liver disease. Avoid drinking alcohol while on this medication because it can increase your risk of stomach bleeding.
It is not safe to use this medication when you are pregnant or nursing. Talk to your doctor about the risks. Ponstel is not approved for anyone younger than 14 years old without medical advice.
