What is Singulair used for?


Singulair (Montelukast) is a prescription medication used for the prevention of asthma attacks in adults and children as young as 12 months old. Montelukast belongs to a group of medications known as leukotriene receptor antagonists. It works by blocking the effects of leukotrienes, a substance that is produced by the body in response to certain triggers that cause narrowing and swelling of airways in the lungs. Singulair usually starts to work within one day. The recommended daily dose of Montelukast for adults and adolescents over 15 years of age is 10mg once daily in the evening.

The common side effects may include bed-wetting or loss of bladder control in children, cold symptoms such as stuffy nose, diarrhea, fever or flu like symptoms, headache, and stomach pain. The serious side effects may include:

This medication should not be used during pregnancy unless it is clearly needed. It is unknown if this medication passes into breast milk. Talk to your doctor before breast-feeding your baby. There may be an interaction between Montelukast and other medications such as amiodarone, losartan, omeprazole, quinine, carbamazepine, fluvastatin, irbesartan, etc.
