What Is Welchol Used For?

The medication Welchol is a cholesterol-lowering drug. This medication lowers the “bad” cholesterol, also known as LDL (low-density lipoprotein) cholesterol. Lowering of “bad” cholesterol further helps in reducing the risk of hardening of arteries which can lead to heart attacks, stroke and circulation problems. Welchol is also used along with diet and exercise to improve glycemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes. However, this medication is not approved for treating type I diabetes.

What Are The Possible Side Effects Of Welchol?

Most common side effects of Welchol include mild constipation, nausea, vomiting, gas, upset stomach, indigestion, weakness, tiredness, headache, muscle pain, runny nose, sore throat, cough and flu-like symptoms. Some other side effects include infection, back pain, abdominal pain, lack of energy, and muscle pain. These are not all the possible side effects of Welchol. Are there any Precautions and Drug interactions for Welchol?

Do not take any other medications within 4 hours before you take Welchol as it can make it harder for your body to absorb certain other medications. Avoid eating foods that are high in fat or cholesterol. Welchol will not be as effective in lowering your cholesterol if you do not follow the cholesterol-lowering diet plan.

Do not take Welchol, if you:

• Are allergic to colesevelam or any other ingredients present in the medication
• Have bowel obstruction
• Have type 1 diabetes
• Have diabetic ketoacidosis
• Have very high levels of triglycerides
• Have been diagnosed with inflammation of the pancreas caused by high levels of triglycerides
• Are taking other anti-diabetic agents such as dipeptidyl peptidase 4 inhibitor and thiazolidinediones
• Have been diagnosed with Fredrickson Type I, III, IV, and V dyslipidemias

Welchol has not been studied in children under 10 years of age or girls who haven’t had menstrual periods yet.

Before using Welchol, tell your doctor if you:
• Have trouble swallowing
• Have a stomach, intestinal or digestive disorder
• Have a history of major stomach or bowel surgery
• Have a vitamin A, D, E or K deficiency
• Are at risk of bowel obstruction (e.g., patients with gastroparesis, other gastrointestinal motility disorders or a history of major gastrointestinal surgery)
• Are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. Welchol is not expected to harm the unborn baby
• Are breastfeeding. Taking Welchol can make it harder for your body to absorb certain vitamins. These vitamins are important if you are nursing a baby.
• Have phenylketonuria (PKU). The powder form of Welchol may contain phenylalanine.

• Cyclosporine (a medication used to prevent organ rejection

• Birth control pills containing Ethinyl estradiol and norethindrone
• Medications used to treat high blood pressure like olmesartan and medoxomil
• Phenytoin (a medication used to treat epilepsy)
• Warfarin (an anticoagulant)
