What is Xelpros Used for?

Xelpros (Latanoprost) is a prescription medication used to reduce elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) in patients with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension. Open-angle glaucoma is a chronic eye condition where the drainage angle of the eye (between the iris and cornea) is open, but the eye's drainage system is not functioning effectively. This leads to a gradual increase in intraocular pressure, which can damage the optic nerve and result in irreversible vision loss, often starting with peripheral vision. Ocular hypertension is a condition in which the intraocular pressure is higher than normal, without damage to the optic nerve or loss of vision. It is a risk factor for developing glaucoma. The active ingredient in Xelpros is Latanoprost. Latanoprost belongs to a class of medications known as prostaglandin analogs. It works by increasing the outflow of the aqueous humor, effectively lowering the intraocular pressure and preserving the optic nerve.

What are the Possible Side Effects of Xelpros?

• Eye irritation;
• Eye redness;
• Eyelid skin darkening;

It is crucial to continue using this medication exactly as your doctor prescribes. Xelpros comes as an eye emulsion. Please do not take it by mouth. This medication is for use in the eyes only. Wash your hands thoroughly before use. Tilt your head back or lie down. Gently pull down your lower eyelid to create a small "pocket." Do not touch your eye, eyelid, or any other surface with the tip of the dropper to avoid contamination. Instill one drop into the affected eye(s) once daily in the evening. Close your eyes gently. Press on the inner corner of your eye near the nose for about 1 minute to help the medication stay in the eye and reduce systemic absorption. If using other eye drops, wait at least 5 minutes between medications. If you wear contact lenses, remove them before applying Xelpros and wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting. You may experience temporary blurred vision after using Xelpros. Do not drive or operate machinery until your vision returns to normal. This medication is for long-term management. Continue use as prescribed even if you don't feel immediate changes.

You should not use Xelpros and inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have or have had:
• Any history of iris pigmentation or concerns about eye color changes;
• Any recent eye surgery or trauma;
• Aphakia or pseudophakia;
• History of eye inflammation (e.g., uveitis, iritis);
• History of herpes simplex keratitis or other viral eye infections.
• History of macular edema

Tell your doctor about all the medications you use, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements, to prevent drug interactions that might be fatal to your health. This drug interaction may make your drug less effective, cause adverse effects, or potentiate other drugs' actions. There may be a drug interaction between Xelpros and other medications, such as other prostaglandin analogs and eye drops containing thimerosal. If you use eye drops containing thimerosal, space out the administration by at least 5 minutes.
