What is Zerviate Used for?

Zerviate (Cetirizine Ophthalmic Solution 0.24%) is a prescription medication used to treat ocular itching associated with allergic conjunctivitis. Allergic conjunctivitis is an allergic reaction of the conjunctiva (the membrane lining the eyelids and covering the white part of the eye) triggered by airborne allergens such as pollen, pet dander, or dust mites. Common symptoms include intense eye itching, redness, tearing, and sometimes swelling of the eyelids. The active ingredient in Zerviate is Cetirizine Ophthalmic Solution 0.24%. Cetirizine belongs to a class of medications known as highly selective histamine H1-receptor antagonists. It works by blocking H1 receptors, preventing histamine from binding to the nerve endings and blood vessels in the conjunctiva. This action, therefore, alleviates symptoms of ocular itching.

Are there any precautions or drug interactions for Zerviate?

Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to Zerviate or have any other medical conditions that may affect your use of Zerviate. It is crucial to continue using this medication exactly as your doctor prescribes. Zerviate comes as an eye drop. Apply in the eyes only. Please do not take it by mouth. Wash your hands thoroughly before use. Tilt your head back or lie down. Gently pull down your lower eyelid to create a small pocket. Instill one drop into the affected eye(s) twice daily (approximately 8 hours apart). Close your eyes gently. Press on the inner corner of your eye near the nose for about 1 minute to help the medication stay in the eye. If using other eye drops, wait at least 5 minutes between medications. Do not touch your eye, eyelid, or any other surface with the tip of the dropper to avoid contamination. If you wear contact lenses, remove them before applying Zerviate and wait at least 10 minutes before reinserting. Do not wear contact lenses if your eyes are red and irritated. You may experience temporary blurred vision after applying Zerviate. Do not drive or operate machinery until your vision returns to normal.

You should not use Zerviate and inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have or have had:
• Any eye condition or infection

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. It is unknown if Cetirizine Ophthalmic will harm an unborn baby. Zerviate should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Inform your doctor if you are breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed. It is unknown if Cetirizine Ophthalmic passes into breast milk or if it may harm a nursing infant. Discuss the benefits and risks of using this medication when breastfeeding with your doctor. The safety and effectiveness of Zerviate in children below 2 years of age have not been established.

Tell your doctor about all the medications you use, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements, to prevent drug interactions that might be fatal to your health. This drug interaction may make your drug less effective, cause adverse effects, or potentiate other drugs' actions. There may be a drug interaction between Zerviate and other ophthalmic medications.
