What is Ziagen Used for?

Ziagen (Abacavir) is a prescription medicine used to treat and prevent the replication of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infection in adults, adolescents, and children. Ziagen lowers the chance of having HIV complications, including the new onset of infections and cancer, and it improves the quality of life of affected patients. The active ingredient in Ziagen is Abacavir. Abacavir belongs to the class of medication called nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors-NRTI. Guanosine analogue inhibits HIV-1 reverse transcriptase by competing with dGTP as substrate, inhibiting viral replication. As a result, Abacavir reduces the amount of HIV in the blood.

• Depression or low mood;
• Mouth ulcer or thrush;

• Rapid weight loss;
• Severe stomach pain;
• Unusual body weakness;

Are there any Precautions and Drug Interactions for Ziagen?

Before taking Abacavir, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it; or have any other allergies. Ziagen is a tablet and should be taken orally with a cup of water, usually 1-2 times daily with or without food or as directed by your doctor. You should follow your doctor's prescription and instructions on how to use your Abacavir and other antiviral medicines you may be using. To decrease your risk of spreading HIV disease to others, continue to take all HIV medications exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Use an effective barrier method (latex or polyurethane condoms/dental dams) during sexual activity as directed by your doctor. Do not share personal items (such as needles/syringes, toothbrushes, and razors) that may have contact with blood or other body fluids. You should use your medication regularly. Skipping or changing your dose without your doctor's consent may cause the amount of virus to increase, make the infection more difficult to treat (resistant), or worsen side effects. Do not stop at any time without contacting your doctor, and do not miss your clinic appointment while taking Ziagen tablets.

You should not take Ziagen and inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have or have had:
• Chronic alcoholics;
• Heart diseases;
• Kidney disease;
• Liver disease (including chronic hepatitis B and C and cirrhosis);
• Low blood pressure or you are using antihypertensive medicines

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, and use your drugs as prescribed to control your infection. HIV can be passed to your baby if the virus is not controlled during pregnancy. Women with HIV or AIDS should not breastfeed a baby. If your baby is born without HIV, the virus may be passed to the baby in your breast milk. You should discuss with your doctor the available feeding practices for your child.

Tell your doctor about all the medications you use, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements, to prevent drug interactions which might be fatal to your health. This interaction may make your drug less effective, cause adverse effects, or potentiate other drugs' actions. For example, there may be a drug interaction between Ziagen and other medications, such as:
• Elvitegravir/cobicistat/emtricitabine/tenofovir DF;
• Methadone;
• Other HIV medication;
• Riociguat
