After all, they’re glamorous and beautiful, both on camera and off, and their looks are an important part of their careers--so they put a lot of work, time, and effort into maintaining and improving them. Plus, like it or not, they have much larger budgets for hiring the best of the best experts to look after their wellness, employ health and fitness solutions that work, and provide suggestions that keep them in tip-top camera-ready shape.

Though he was first opposed to it, he has since changed his tune and now swears by the practice of meditation as one of his secrets for getting through his days in a balanced and healthy manner. He even personally recommended a meditation book as one of the most important books to read, and had the founder of the Headspace app come to personally teach him and his family meditation practices that would work for them.

    On his blog, Gates Notes, he recently shared that he had a change of heart on the practice of meditation and decided to take it up. He had heard that many people were turning to meditation as a way to relax, clear their minds, and improve their focus, but he thought the practice wasn’t for him.

    “I wasn’t interested,” he shares. “I thought of meditation as a woo-woo thing tied somehow to reincarnation, and I didn’t buy into it. Lately, though, I’ve gained a much better understanding of meditation. I’m certainly not an expert, but I now meditate two or three times a week, for about 10 minutes each time. Melinda meditates too. Sometimes we sit to meditate together. (We use comfortable chairs; there’s no way I could do the lotus position.)

    I now see that meditation is simply exercise for the mind, similar to the way we exercise our muscles when we play sports. For me, it has nothing to do with faith or mysticism. It’s about taking a few minutes out of my day, learning how to pay attention to the thoughts in my head, and gaining a little bit of distance from them. … it’s a great tool for improving my focus. It’s also helped me step back and get some ease with whatever thoughts or emotions are present.”

    Meghan Markle: find a healthy balance of diet, exercise, and meditation

    Looking after your physical health can only get you so far. At some point, you must realize that securing your mental and emotional health is just as important, if not more so. After all, much to do with your physical health begins with your mindset. If you’re depressed, have low self worth, or just feel generally unmotivated, it will be much more difficult to pursue your optimal levels of health and wellness. Taking care of yourself begins from within.

    That’s why, as Prince Harry has notably pointed out, you must ask for help when you need it. It is no use to suffer in silence. Help is available out there for you, no matter how low you feel, and talking to someone and sharing your heart is the first step in getting the help you need. It is possible to feel better and live a fulfilling life, and all of us need a helping hand every now and then in order to do so.

    Prince Harry would know, after all: as a member of the Royal Family, he lives a very high-pressure, stressful life in the public eye, where every move he makes is scrutinized and must abide by proper royal decorum, as decreed by tradition and propriety. That’s a lot to handle as you grow up in the spotlight! In the midst of all this existing pressure, he lost his mother in a dramatic car crash when he was just a young boy--a circumstance that would be unbearably hard for anyone, but especially a child like him. In other words, Prince Harry knows a thing or two about struggling with grief, dealing with stigma, and battling for the improvement of his mental health. He has set an excellent example by asking for help when he needed it and advocating for others to do so, too.

    That’s one secret we can pick up from one of the most well known public figures in the world: look after your mental health and ask for help when you need it.
