What is Erdotin used for?

Erdotin (Erdosteine) is used to treat the symptoms associated with episodes of chronic bronchitis (inflammation of the lining of the bronchial tubes). Symptoms of chronic bronchitis include persistent coughing with thick mucus, wheezing, chest discomfort or tightness, and shortness of breath. Erdotin may also be used for other purposes not listed above. Erdotin belongs to a class of medications called mucolytic agents, and works by acting on the phlegm (mucous) in the respiratory tract or airways. Erdotin can also be used as an expectorant, which is an ingredient in medications used to increase the water content of airway secretions. Erdotin increases the water content of airway secretions in order to decrease the stickiness and thickness of the mucous, making it easier to clear from the lungs. This decreases symptoms of bronchitis that are caused by mucous, and can help reduce the occurrence of respiratory infections. Your doctor will discuss the most effective treatment for your symptoms. Take Erdotin exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Follow all directions on your prescription label and read all medication guides or instruction sheets. Do not take this medication in larger or smaller amounts, or for longer than recommended by your doctor. The usual dosage is one capsule twice daily, for up to 10 days. Swallow the capsule whole with a drink of water. You may take this medication with or without food.

What Are the Possible Side Effects of Erdotin?

Some of the common side effects of Erdotin may include stomach pain and heart burn. Serious side effects of Erdotin are not likely, but may include severe headache, difficulty breathing, changes in taste, severe nausea or vomiting, swelling of the blood vessels and mucosal tissues below the skin (angioedema), or severe diarrhea. These are not all the possible side effects of Erdotin. In case of any unexpected effect, consult your healthcare professional immediately. If any side effects worsen or persist, contact your doctor. If you experience any signs of an allergic reaction, such as hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat.

• Homocystinuria (deficiency of the cystathionine-synthetase enzyme)
• Severe liver failure
• Severe decreased kidney function
• Stomach (peptic) ulcer

Before you start taking Erdotin, tell your doctor if you have any of the following conditions:
