The brand Dulcolax is available in strengths of 5 mg and 10 mg tablets.

What is Dulcolax Used for?

Dulcolax (Bisacodyl) is an over-the-counter medication used for the treatment of constipation (difficulty in passing stool). It may also be used in the hospital to empty the bowel before a camera test that involves visualizing the intestine or surgical procedures. The active ingredient in Dulcolax is Bisacodyl. It belongs to a class of drugs called stimulant laxatives. It stimulates the muscles of the bowel to contract, allowing for easy bowel movement. Also, it softens your poo so you can poo more easily. After taking Dulcolax, it may take up to 6-12 hours to feel its effects.

What are the Possible Side Effects of Dulcolax?

If you experience any of the following common side effects, contact your doctor or pharmacist immediately:
• Abdominal pain;
• Diarrhoea;
• Dehydration;
• Dizziness;
• Nausea and vomiting;
• Severe abdominal cramps

Stop using Dulcolax and contact your doctor right away if you have any of the severe side effects, such as:
• Blood in your poo (stool);
• Sudden fall a few hours after taking the first tablet;
• Worsening of your symptoms

This is not a complete list of Dulcolax's adverse effects. Please contact your doctor or pharmacist if any of the above-listed side effects persist or worsen.

Are there any precautions or drug interactions for Dulcolax?

Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to Dulcolax or have other problems when using Dulcolax. Dulcolax comes as either oral tablets or suppositories (which is a medicine that you push gently into your back passage (anus)). If you are using the suppository, ensure you do not have tear in your anus and speak to a doctor on how to insert it. You should read the manufacturer's guide carefully and do not use a dosage that exceeds the recommended amount. It is recommended to take Dulcolax oral tablet(s) at night to have a bowel movement the following morning. If you are taking the oral tablet, you can take it with or without food. Swallow tablets whole with water. Please do not take them with milk. Never take 2 doses at the same time. Never take an extra dose to make up for a forgotten one. Insert the suppository gently into your back passage (anus). It is worth mentioning that suppositories work quickly (usually between 10 and 45 minutes), so use them when you are near a toilet. It is recommended not to use Dulcolax for more than 5 days continuously. You should drink enough water, eat fruits, and eat vegetables to prevent recurrence. However, if you experience no improvement in your condition after using Dulcolax, please consult a doctor for a proper assessment.

You should not use Dulcolax and inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have or have had:
• Acute appendicitis;
• Acute inflammatory bowel disease (such as Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis);
• Anal fissure (tear in the anus);
• Intestinal blockage;
• Severe abdominal pain associated with nausea and vomiting

Discuss with your doctor if you are pregnant, or plan to get pregnant, and have recurrent constipation. Bisacodyl tablets or suppositories are not generally recommended for pregnant women. You should know that constipation is common in pregnancy and can sometimes be treated with diet and lifestyle changes. Eating more fibre, drinking plenty of fluids, and increasing exercise levels can all help. Other medications, such as lactulose or Fybogel, are generally safe to use during pregnancy. You should discuss concerns with your doctor. It is safe to take or use Dulcolax medication or suppository if you are a breastfeeding mother. Always use it for the shortest time necessary. Drinking plenty of fluids is also essential for maintaining a healthy breast milk supply; consult your doctor for personalized advice.

Tell your doctor about all the medications you use, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements, to prevent drug interactions that might be fatal to your health. This drug interaction may make your drug less effective, cause adverse effects, or potentiate other drugs' actions. There may be a drug interaction between Dulcolax and other drugs, such as other similar laxatives, antacids, water pills (diuretics), prednisolone, and digoxin.
