What is Gastrovol Used for?

Gastrovol (Bismuth Subsalicylate) is an over-the-counter medication used to temporarily relieve various gastrointestinal symptoms, including upset stomach, heartburn, indigestion, and nausea. It also helps relieve diarrhea and cramps associated with diarrhea. Gastrovol also helps reduce the number of bowel movements and firm up stool. The active ingredient in Gastrovol is Bismuth Subsalicylate. Bismuth Subsalicylate belongs to a class of medications known as antidiarrheals and antacids. As an antidiarrheal, it works by decreasing the flow of fluids and electrolytes into the bowel, which helps to reduce the fluidity of stool. As an antacid, it works by neutralizing stomach acid, providing relief from heartburn and upset stomach.

What are the Possible Side Effects of Gastrovol?

If you experience any of the following common side effects, contact your doctor or pharmacist immediately:
• Darkening of the tongue or stools;
• Mild constipation

Stop using Gastrovol and contact your doctor right away if you have any of the severe side effects, such as:
• Signs of an allergic reaction, including rash, breathing difficulties, and itching of the face, tongue, or throat

This is not a complete list of Gastrovol's adverse effects. Kindly contact your doctor or pharmacist if any of the above-listed side effects last longer than usual or worsen.

Are there any precautions or drug interactions for Gastrovol?

Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to Gastrovol or have any other medical conditions that may affect your use of Gastrovol. It is crucial to continue using this medication according to the manufacturer's instructions or as prescribed by your doctor. Gastrovol comes as a capsule. Swallow the capsules whole with a glass of water. Do not crush, break, or chew the capsule. The usual dose is two liquid gel capsules per dose, which may be repeated every 30 to 60 minutes as needed. Do not take more than eight doses (16 liquid gel capsules) in 24 hours. Drink plenty of clear fluids to help prevent dehydration caused by diarrhea. Consult a doctor if your symptoms worsen or do not improve within 2 days, if you have a fever, or if you develop ringing in the ears or hearing loss.

You should not use Gastrovol and inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have or have had:
• Active stomach ulcer;
• Bleeding problems;
• Diabetes;
• Gout;
• Kidney disease

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. Bismuth Subsalicylate may harm an unborn baby, especially in the third trimester. Do not use this medicine when pregnant. Inform your doctor if you are breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed. Small amounts of Bismuth Subsalicylate pass into breast milk and may harm a nursing infant. It is best to avoid using this medicine when breastfeeding. The safety and effectiveness of Gastrovol in children under 18 years of age have not been established. Please do not use this medicine in children who have symptoms of chickenpox, cold, or flu, as it carries a risk of Reye's syndrome.

Tell your doctor about all the medications you use, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements, to prevent drug interactions that might be fatal to your health. This drug interaction may make your drug less effective, cause adverse effects, or potentiate other drugs' actions. There may be a drug interaction between Gastrovol and other medications, such as warfarin, aspirin, ibuprofen, methotrexate, tetracycline, etc.
