What is Hytrin Used for?

Hytrin belongs to the class of drugs called Alpha Blockers, Antihypertensives. Hytrin is a prescription medication used to treat the symptoms of an enlarged prostate (benign prostate hyperplasia) and high blood pressure (hypertension). Hytrin can be taken alone or in combination with other drugs. Terazosin improves urine flow by relaxing the muscles in your bladder and prostate. It also dilates blood arteries in your body, allowing blood to flow more freely and reduce blood pressure. Terazosin targets alpha-1-adrenoceptors in general but not specific subtypes. The inhibition of these alpha-1-adrenoceptors causes smooth muscle relaxation in blood arteries and the prostate, lowering blood pressure and improving urine flow. Smooth muscle cells make up around 40% of the prostate's volume, so their relaxation relieves strain on the urethra.
