What is Midamor Used for?

Midamor (Amiloride) is a prescription medicine used to treat or prevent hypokalemia (low potassium levels in the blood) and prevent your body from absorbing too much salt and water in people with high blood pressure or congestive heart failure. The active ingredient in Midamor is Amiloride. Amiloride belongs to the class of medication called potassium-sparing diuretics. Amiloride works by causing your body to get rid of extra salt and water while also preventing the kidney from getting rid of too much potassium. Lowering high blood pressure helps prevent strokes, kidney problems, and heart attacks.

Are there any Precautions and Drug Interactions for Midamor?

Before you commence this medication, you should tell your doctor if you are allergic to it or have any other allergies. You should take this medication by mouth with food, usually once daily or as directed by your doctor. If you take this drug too close to bedtime, you may need to wake up to urinate. Therefore, it is best to take this medication at least 4 hours before bedtime. Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions about how and when to take this medication.

You should avoid a diet high in salt. Too much salt will cause your body to retain water and make this medication less effective. This drug may increase the potassium levels in your blood. Limit foods high in potassium, such as bananas and orange juice. Consult your doctor or pharmacist before using any potassium products (such as potassium supplements or salt substitutes).

It would be best to limit your alcoholic beverages while taking Amiloride tablets. Drinking alcohol with this medicine can worsen your side effects. Amiloride makes your body lose water by urination. Avoid becoming dehydrated during exercise, hot weather, or not drinking enough water. Follow your doctor's instructions about the type and amount of water you should drink. In some cases, drinking too much water can be as unsafe as not drinking enough.

You should not take Midamor and inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have or have had:
• Diabetes mellitus;
• Breathing problems;
• Heart disease;
• Kidney disease or are unable to urinate;
• Liver diseases such as liver cirrhosis;
• On a low-salt diet

You should inform your doctor if you have become pregnant or plan to become pregnant while taking this medication. Amiloride should not be used during pregnancy. If you become pregnant while taking this medication, contact your doctor immediately. It is not known if Amiloride passes into breast milk. If you are a breastfeeding mother taking this medication, it may affect your baby. Do not breastfeed while you are taking this medication.

Tell your doctor about all the medications you use, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements to prevent drug interactions, which might be fatal to your health. This drug interaction may make your drug less effective, cause adverse effects, or potentiate other drugs' action. There may be a drug interaction between Midamor and other drugs such as:
• Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors such as enalapril, ramipril;
• Cyclosporine;
• Digoxin;
• Lithium;
• Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs, e.g., ibuprofen, naproxen)
• Medications that reduce high blood pressure;
• Medications that increase potassium levels (such as potassium supplements, spironolactone, triamterene, and salt substitutes containing potassium);
• Quinidine;
• Tacrolimus
