Osphena (Ospemifene) is a prescription medicine used to treat moderate to severe painful intercourse or moderate to severe vaginal dryness, both symptoms of changes in your vagina due to menopause. The active ingredient in the Osphena tablet is Ospemifene. Ospemifene belongs to the class of medications called hormones (selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERM)). Osphena (Ospemifene) works by replacing the estrogen that is usually produced by the body. It acts like estrogen in your vaginal tissue to relieve vaginal dryness and help make sex less painful.

Are there any Precautions and Drug Interactions for Osphena?

Before taking this medication, you should tell your doctor and pharmacist if you are allergic to Ospemifene, any other drugs, or any ingredients in Ospemifene tablets. Talk with your healthcare provider regularly about whether you should continue taking the Osphena tablet. You should reach out to your doctor or pharmacist right away if you get vaginal bleeding while taking this medicine. You should have a pelvic exam, breast exam, and mammogram (breast X-ray) every year unless your healthcare provider tells you something else. Taking Ospemifene may increase your chances of developing endometrial cancer (cancer of the womb). Tell your doctor if you have or have ever had cancer or if you have abnormal vaginal bleeding. Your doctor will probably not prescribe an Osphena tablet for you. Call your doctor immediately if you have any unusual vaginal bleeding while taking ospemifene. It would be best to inform your doctor if you smoke a cigarette. Osphena may increase your chance of having blood clots, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure. It would be best if you informed your doctor of your health condition to prescribe the best choice of medication for your condition. Tell your doctor if your condition does not improve or if it worsens.

You should not take Osphena and inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have or have had:
• A history of heart attack, stroke, or blood clot;
• Any breast, uterine, or hormone-dependent cancer;

Women who are pregnant or who may become pregnant should not handle this medication or breathe the dust from the tablets. If you become pregnant while taking ospemifene, call your doctor immediately. It is unknown if this medication passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.

Tell your doctor about all the medications you use, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements to prevent drug interactions, which might be fatal to your health. This drug interaction may make your drug less effective, cause adverse effects, or potentiate other drugs' action. There may be a drug interaction between Osphena and other drugs such as:
• Bazedoxifene/conjugated estrogens;
• Birth control pills;
• Clomiphene;
• Conjugated estrogens;
• Dienogest/estradiol valerate;
