What is Tiazac XC Used for?

Tiazac XC (Diltiazem Hydrochloride Extended-Release) is a prescription medicine used to treat mild-to-moderate high blood pressure and chronic stable angina (sudden severe chest pain). The active ingredient in Tiazac XC is Diltiazem Hydrochloride. Diltiazem Hydrochloride belongs to a class of medications called Antidysrhythmic, IV; calcium channel blockers. Diltiazem works by relaxing blood vessels and reducing the heart's workload. This mechanism allows the blood to flow more easily. As a result, treating hypertension prevents sudden cardiac death and damage to the kidney, liver, and brain (stroke).

Are there any Precautions and Drug Interactions for Tiazac XC?

Tiazac XC is a tablet and should be used according to your doctor's instructions. You should not use Tiazac XC if you are allergic to it or other calcium channel blockers such as nifedipine or amlodipine. Take this medication by mouth with or without food, usually once daily or as directed by your doctor. You should swallow the capsules whole. Do not crush or chew the capsules. Doing so can release all the drugs at once and may increase your risk of side effects. It may take up to 2 to 4 weeks to see the full effects of this medication. You should limit your alcoholic beverages while on antihypertensive medication. Consult your doctor if you experience severe side effects of this medication, such as swollen ankle or a sudden drop in blood pressure. Tell your doctor if your condition is getting worse or if there is no improvement in your condition.

You should not take Tiazac XC and inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have or have had:
• Heart failure;
• Heart rhythm problems such as sick sinus syndrome/atrioventricular block;
• Kidney disease;
• Liver disease

Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or breastfeed a baby. During pregnancy, this medication should be used only when needed. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. Tiazac XC passes into breast milk and may have undesirable effects on a newborn. It would be best to consult your doctor before breastfeeding if treating heart problems with a calcium channel blocker. Tell your doctor about all the medications you use, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements, to prevent drug interactions that might be fatal to your health. This drug interaction may make your drug less effective, cause adverse effects, or potentiate other drugs' actions. There may be a drug interaction between Tiazac XC and other drugs, such as:
• Dantrolene;
• Erythromycin;
• Flibanserin;
• Itraconazole;
• Lomitapide;
• Lonafarnib;
• Pimozide;
