What is Triphasil Used for?

Triphasil (Levonorgestrel/Ethinyl Estradiol) is a combination prescription birth control pill containing female hormones used to prevent pregnancy in women of reproductive age. The active ingredients in Triphasil are Levonorgestrel and Ethinyl Estradiol. Triphasil belongs to the group of medications called Birth control pills. It works mainly by preventing the release of an egg (ovulation) during your menstrual cycle. It also makes vaginal fluid thicker to help prevent sperm from reaching an egg (fertilization) and changes the lining of the uterus (womb) to avoid the attachment of a fertilized egg. Using this medication does not protect you or your partner against sexually transmitted diseases (HIV, gonorrhea, chlamydia).

If you experience any of the following common side effects, contact your doctor or pharmacist immediately:

• Disorder of gallbladder;
• Disorder of menstruation;

Are there any Precautions and Drug Interactions for Triphasil?

Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to any estrogens (such as Ethinyl estradiol, mestranol) or any progestins (such as norethindrone, Desogestrel); or if you have any other allergies. Take Triphasil pills exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Do not take this medicine in larger or smaller amounts or longer than recommended. It would be best to take your first pill on the first day of your period or the first Sunday after your period begins. You may need to use backup birth control, such as condoms or a spermicide, when you first start using Triphasil pills. Some birth control packs contain seven "reminder" pills to keep you on your regular cycle. Your period will usually begin while you are using these reminder pills. You may have breakthrough bleeding, especially during the first 3 months. Tell your doctor if this bleeding continues or is very heavy. You are likely to get pregnant if you miss pills, start a new pack late, or take your pill at a different time of the day than usual. If you have diabetes, taking Triphasil may increase your blood sugar. Make sure you check your blood sugar regularly.

You should not take Triphasil and inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have or have had:
• A seizure or migraine headache;
• Cancer such as liver cancer;
• Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis (chronic inflammatory bowel disease);
• Diabetes mellitus;
• Hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) - a disorder of blood coagulation causing failure of the kidneys);
• Irregular vaginal bleeding;
• Lost a baby in the second trimester;
• Recently had a baby;
• Sickle cell disease;
• Smoking mainly if you are a heavy smoker (15 or more cigarettes per day) and are aged over 35 years;
• Unusual vaginal bleeding that a doctor has not checked

This medication should not be used during pregnancy. Tell your doctor right away if you become pregnant or think you may be pregnant. If you have just given birth or had a pregnancy loss, or had an abortion after the first three months, talk with your doctor about reliable forms of birth control, and find out when it is safe to start using birth control that contains a form of estrogen, such as this medication. This medication may decrease breast milk production. It passes into breast milk and may negatively affect a nursing infant. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.

Tell your doctor about all the medications you use, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements to prevent drug interactions, which might be fatal to your health. This drug interaction may make your drug less effective, cause adverse effects, or potentiate other drugs' action. There may be a drug interaction between Triphasil and other drugs such as:
• Anti-viral hepatitis C virus (HCV) medicines such as ombitasvir, paritaprevir, ritonavir and dasabuvir;
• Antibiotics such as ampicillin, other penicillin’s, and tetracyclines;
• Barbiturates (certain types of medicines prescribed for epilepsy, such as phenobarbitone);
• Corticosteroids such as dexamethasone;
• Medicines for epilepsy (such as phenytoin, primidone, carbamazepine, and topiramate);
• Rifampicin and rifabutin for the treatment of tuberculosis;
• Ritonavir for the treatment of HIV infection;
• Tranexamic acid oral
